Although Africa contributes minimally to global carbon emissions, it is disproportionately affected by climate change. According to the 2021 Global Climate Risk Index, five of the ten countries most affected by climate change are in Africa. Extreme weather events, including rising temperatures, droughts, bushfires, and floods, disrupt lives and livelihoods across the continent. These challenges are compounded by the delayed global transition to a low-carbon economy, contravening frameworks like the Kyoto Protocol and the Paris Agreement.
The extractive sector remains a significant contributor to carbon emissions, making sustainable energy transitions imperative. CEDA, with its technical expertise in climate change and clean energy, advises policymakers and extractive companies on locally adaptable solutions that balance carbon reduction with sustainable resource utilization. These efforts aim to secure Africa’s economic future while addressing pressing environmental challenges, in alignment with global sustainability goals.
